I mounted both racks on my CR-V in my driveway at 7 AM on a Tuesday. I timed everything. The Allen Sports took 14 minutes and 32 seconds to assemble. The Hollywood Racks took 38 minutes, and I'm being generous because half of that was deciphering the instructions.

The loading workflow: it's always dark, it's always raining

Neither rack is perfect. But if I'm loading a bike in the dark, I want a tray rack with wheel holders I can see and straps I can feel. The Hollywood wins there. The Allen wins on price and weight.
Tilt features: more important than you think
Lori called the Allen Sports Deluxe's tilt capability "incredibly useful, allowing easy access to the back of the car, even when a bike is on the rack." Ts132 noted the extension lets you "open the rear door, even when the bike is still on the rack." I use this constantly, grabbing a jacket, a water bottle, or a snack without unloading the bikes.
The Hollywood Racks Sport Rider SE has a tilt feature that works with rear hatches. Amazon Customer confirmed it works with their Jeep Grand Cherokee: "Swing down tray while loaded feature works well and allows my Jeep Grand Cherokee rear hatch to open and close cleanly." Matthias Lambert noted it tilts "both down away from vehicle to access the tailgate, as well as upwards when not in use."
But there's a catch. JCC found that with two e-bikes installed, "the tail gate cannot open, even tilted, since the handle bars closest to the vehicle interfere with the operation of the tailgate." E-bike handlebars are wide. That's a real limitation.
The Hollywood Racks Sport Rider SE: best for e-bikes and heavy loads
RSB, a former auto, marine, and FAA aircraft mechanic who raced the Baja 500, said the Hollywood Racks is "very well designed and fabricated." That's the kind of credential that makes me pay attention.
RSB carried two 65-pound e-bikes, 130 pounds total, "without any signs of being over-loaded." Amazon Customer called it "rock solid" for 60-pound Townie e-bikes.
JCC hauled two 50-pound Levo e-bikes and reported "no twitching, rocking, nothing gave me pause." Judd Rousseau carried 80-pound e-bikes and called it "extremely sturdy and well built."
This rack costs ~$400. Matthias Lambert was quoted ~$699 for a comparable rack from a dealer. That's a ~$300 difference for the same capability.
The downside is real. It's heavy. Judd Rousseau warned about storage space. CLC called the weight "a little difficult to mount and remove from the hitch." The wheel holders are stiff initially. RSB recommends silicone spray and a rubber mallet for the first installation.
And the instructions are not good. Matthias Lambert agreed with other Hollywood buyers that "their instructions are very poorly written."
But here's what I learned hauling my e-bike to the trailhead last fall: hanging racks sway, tray racks don't. My bike's handlebars cleared the tailgate. JCC's didn't. Context matters, and I've got it.
Should you buy the Hollywood Racks Sport Rider SE? Yes, if you haul e-bikes, fat bikes, or anything over 50 pounds per bike. It's the best bike rack for SUVs with heavy bikes. Just budget time for assembly and space for storage.
The Allen Sports Deluxe 4-Bike Hitch Mount: the people's champion
At ~$99, the Allen Sports Deluxe is the best value in the industry. Not the best rack. The best value. William Roche said it best: "You just cannot beat the price... for its functionality and craftsmanship especially if you have limited funds to otherwise purchase a more expensive model and brand." Ts132 put it even more directly: "it is under ~$180 bike rack.
and it is just as good of a >~$100 bike rack."
The build quality surprises people. RayC said "There is nothing cheap about this rack." Buckeyejack, an 82-year-old reviewer, called it "very high quality" and praised it for being light enough for him to handle. Victoria called the dollar-to-value ratio "EXCELLENT."
But it's not perfect. The bikes swing freely once mounted. William Roche confirmed that. The straps aren't rubber-type like the expensive racks. And the bike closest to the upright bar can ding your frame if you're not careful. Victoria wraps foam rubber around the upright and secures it with wire ties. William Roche used his wife's quilting batting. I've used pipe insulation and electrical tape.
Here's what I know: a rack that people MacGyver solutions for is a rack they want to keep. Nobody MacGyvers a rack they're going to return.
Should you buy the Allen Sports Deluxe? Yes, if you want to spend under ~$100 and don't mind a little sway. It's the best bike rack for SUVs on a budget. Bring bungee cords.
What else to consider
The Young Bike Rack Hitch Mount is the new kid on the block. It claims 200 pounds of capacity and platform trays that handle fat tires up to 5 inches. The price sits at ~$280, which undercuts most platform racks.
But it hasn't been on the market long enough for me to trust the long-term durability. The wheel holders are stiff and the instructions are minimal.
It's a promising option if you want tray-style loading without paying Hollywood Racks money.
The MaxxHaul Hitch Mount 4-Bike Rack is the budget platform pick at ~$130. It swings down for tailgate access and carries 150 pounds. But it's heavy steel, and buyers report rust after one winter if you don't keep it painted. It's a solid choice for occasional use, but I wouldn't trust it as a daily driver.
The Allen Sports Deluxe Trunk Mount Rack is the 2-bike trunk version of the same design. It's ~$70 and works fine on sedans. But for an SUV, a hitch rack is safer and easier to load. The trunk straps on an SUV put stress on the hatch hinges.
The Allen Sports Deluxe Trunk Mount 3-Bike Carrier is the 3-bike trunk version. Same story, same trade-offs. Fine for a sedan, not ideal for an SUV.
The bottom line
The Hollywood Racks Sport Rider SE is the best bike rack for SUVs if you carry heavy bikes or e-bikes.
